I've been trying for a while to understand what org-mode gives you. I saw Dominik's tech talk at Google, and Bieber's discussion on dropping vim with emacs. I really like the approach taken in this article, showing some of the language features. IIUC, what org-mode provides you is: 1. a (markdown-like) lightweight document markup language, with lots of syntax hooks ("#+") for different tools. 2. some (even lighter, i.e., no "#+" required) organization-based syntax hooks. These are the TODO/DONE/... labels (plus the "[ ]" tidbits), the table syntax, the metadata (e.g. AUTHOR). In fact, the idea of adding metadata to a lightweight markup language is very interesting. 3. some "programmy" syntax items, including things like tags, spreadsheet-like tables, properties, etc. 4. the agenda view. This is a horizontal search on multiple .org files to create a work agenda. 5. some emacs functionality related to automatic recognition and operation on some of the syntax items. For example, org-table-align will "Re-align the table and don't move to another field". There are lots of other features, but nothing that other lightweight markup languages don't/can't have too. My main concerns are: 1. it is inextricably tied to emacs. AFAICT, only (5) in the previous list is emacs-only. All the other functionalities are related to the markup syntax. 2. I wish the org-mode language was fully markdown compatible (I can barely remember the syntax of one, and now I need to use 2).

Org mode 是我写文档的秘密武器。我用它写书、做演示、写技术文档，甚至写文学化的数据迁移脚本。补充一些技巧：ditaa 不错，但也可以很好地集成 mermaid 并内联显示图片；有做得很完善的 revealjs 导出器；还可以把结果块作为其他代码块的输入！PDF 导出非常出色，配合我写的脚本可以直接发布到我的 reMarkable 上，方便随时随地审阅规格文档。缺点是团队共享文档源文件很难，因为团队里用 emacs 的人太少。我唯一的变通办法是用 emacs 批处理模式生成/导出文档，或者干脆导出成 markdown 维护。

Org mode is my documentation secret weapon. I write books, presentations, technical documentation, and even literate data migration scripts. Some added tips: ditaa is cool but you can also integrate mermaid [0] well and display inline images. There's a well-done revealjs [1] exporter. And you can also use results blocks as input to other code blocks! PDF export is excellent and integrates well with some scripts I wrote to publish them to my remarkable. Great for writing and then reviewing specs on the go. The drawback is that sharing the document sources with a team is hard since so few people on a team are likely going to be emacs users. Only work around I have for that is to run emacs in batch mode to generate/export docs... or just export to markdown and maintain in markdown if the team uses a different tool or dislikes the org syntax. This is a nicely timed article, i'm thirsty for emacs. I dived into emacs in janurary 2021 fully using doom emacs. I started doing scrum and meeting notes in org, then find myself slowly switching existing notes over to it. i keep all my emacs configs from ~/.doom.d in git and can easily bounce from machine to machine. Setup is pretty easy and i've found to have the same emacs experience where I go.
