    > Dongles. Even though all computers now have built-in Bluetooth, many Bluetooth accessories today still ship with proprietary dongles. I assume this is because the manufacturer was worried about inconsistencies or incompatibilities between their own Bluetooth implementation and your computer’s built-in Bluetooth hardware/drivers. I've never seen this before. Is the author mistaking proprietary 2.4 GHz receivers (that do not use Bluetooth) for OEMs' "own Bluetooth implementation"? They refer to swapping between built-in Bluetooth and the dongle, which sounds like Logitech's line of dual-mode keyboards that can use either Bluetooth or Logitech's proprietary "unifying receiver," which is based on Nordic Semiconductor's nRF24L, not Bluetooth.

Somewhere on HN in a similar discussion a bluetooth stack engineer showed up and explained that the entire bluetooth comms stack is a Rube Goldberg house of horrors, so this really no surprise. And then there are the bufferbloat people who finally tracked down the fact that in various common situations, the normal Wi-Fi protocol has a nasty interaction where it self-degrades to ridiculously slow speeds, and will take 2-5 MINUTES to recover. We just don't have enough people doing serious whole-stack hardware+software analysis on our wireless stuff. At least outside of cellular telephony - probably because the money is more concentrated there.

Three notable things in this article are: 1) wireless degrades by degree and is hard to debug 2) it fails silently or just in non-obvious ways 3) people generally have no idea how good it is supposed to work, until they experience it working properly I think there are many things, in life generally, but especially in tech, where these qualities conspire to give people a rotten time. People will complain when things fail, or take action. "Graceful degradation" seems like a feature, but it can keep you on a slippery slope of increasing tolerance toward ever worse performance. The complexity, and fuzzy "connection to everything" means that no one has to take responsibility. Maybe it's your neighbour? Or the trees? Or the alignment of Venus and swamp gas on a full moon? Unless you have a full spectrum RF field meter and other very expensive test gear microwaves are "black magic" to even great engineers. I'm sure when Apple met to discuss remotely degrading iPhone performance the words "They'll never notice" were spoken. Companies that sell complex services and oversell resources love this combo of fuzzy, hard to measure, diffuse, naturally erratic behaviour, broad tolerance, mixed with vague customer expectations. They prevent you from knowing, and comparing, what you should be getting, and what you are getting. Many recent development directions, 5G, secure enclaves, encrypted updates and exfiltration (telemetry), are set to increase the "random magic factor" and make gear even more precarious and mysterious to the end user.

Yeah, I've never really seen the appeal. Wires are just so reliable. I am always in meetings with "sorry, my headphones died, can you repeat that" or people mysteriously vanishing because their laptop can't charge as fast as Zoom draws power and their computer just dies. I have a wired mic, headphones, and power, and it just never breaks. Wireless is just temporary, if you have wireless headphones, you have to plug in a wire to charge them. If your computer has a battery built in, you have to plug it in every day to charge. So it's just an extra chore that makes your life worse. Not that exciting. Maybe everyone fantasizes about being a digital nomad. I do not. I have a great desk, chair, keyboard, and 3 monitors. I couldn't work without them. If I want to see the world, I'll go do that without bringing my computer. A vacation with your computer is just work. A question I'm asked is "what if there's a power outage" but we have had about 10 total minutes of power outage here in Brooklyn in the 10 years I've lived here (during Hurricane Sandy). My thought is I just won't do any work if there isn't any power. We waste an hour a day dealing with wireless not working, 10 minutes every 10 years is no big deal. ("But what if it's the big one!?" Then my ISP's backup batteries will also be drained and I still can't work.)
